How to set up your hardware

Before you start:

If you are using a TurningPoint receiver, connect it to the 9 pin serial port, or connect the adapter to a USB port, on your computer. The diagram below shows these ports on a typical laptop computer. If you are using a USB adapter, you should install the Keyspan High Speed USB Adapter software.

  1. Turn your computer on.
  2. Open TurningPoint by double-clicking its icon on your desktop, or by using the Start menu. This will open the PowerPoint application with the TurningPoint toolbar at the top of the screen.
  3. Click the Lightening Bolt button on the TurningPoint toolbar. This opens the Response Device Wizard.
  4. A list of input devices will be displayed. Check the boxes to show which ones you are using; also check the box at the bottom if your receiver is connected to a serial port or USB adapter.
  5. Click Next.
  6. The wizard displays all communications (COM) ports available on your computer. Click Next.
  7. The wizard checks each COM port in turn. For each COM port, press a button on your response device.
    • If the COM port detects the input, its symbol turns green.
    • If not, click the Not Found button.
    • This is repeated for each COM port.
  8. When the wizard has checked all ports, click Next.
  9. Now type in the start and end numbers of your range of input devices, and click Next.
  10. If you want to test the input devices, click the Start Test button. Press a button on each device in turn; if they are working, you will see the input on the screen. When you have finished, click the End Test button.
  11. Congratulations! Your hardware is set up and ready for use.
